Frequently Asked Questions

  • What makes the ADHD journey unique for each of us?
The intricacy lies in the interplay of several factors. The level of difficulty we encounter with ADHD hinges on elements such as the support and understanding received from those around us, access to quality medical care, life's demands and the expectations we set for ourselves. Every person with ADHD navigates a distinctive set of challenges, that can differ greatly in the variety and combination of ADHD symptoms, which are often accompanied by other co-existing conditions. Our personality traits, unique strengths, talents and abilities come together when addressing and overcoming the challenges of our ADHD experience.
  • What is the coaching partnership?
A coaching partnership, as defined by the International Coaching Federation (ICF), is a collaborative and thought-provoking process that inspires individuals to maximise their personal and professional potential. Rooted in a client-centred approach, coaching engages clients in a creative and solution-focused dialogue, fostering self-discovery and goal-setting. The ICF emphasises a dynamic alliance between coach and client, built on trust and mutual respect. Through active listening, powerful questioning, and strategic goal-setting, the coaching partnership empowers clients to unlock their own insights, overcome challenges, and take purposeful action towards their desired outcomes.
  • What is the difference between coaching, education, and consulting?
An ADHD coach is a Life Coach who brings a specific understanding of ADHD to the coaching process. There is a difference between coaching, education, and consulting because we also teach our clients about ADHD to help them explore their diagnosis, which is not something coaching would typically include, as defined by the International Coaching Federation. We distinguish ‘education and consulting’, which is where we share our expert knowledge about ADHD to answer your questions, and ‘coaching’ which is where we create a supportive space for you to work through the questions that only you can answer for yourself.
  • What is ADHD
At BRNWLD, we view ADHD as a unique neurobiological distinction marked by challenges in executive functioning and working memory. These variations manifest differently among individuals and evolve across the stages of life. There isn't a universal ADHD experience; it's as diverse as the people it affects. Some may sense a constant restlessness, grapple with impulsivity, or find it challenging to sit still. Others might appear more introspective, forgetful, or prone to daydreaming. While occasional bouts of these feelings are relatable to many, for those with ADHD, the intensity reaches a level that significantly hampers routine activities at home, work, or school, making them exceptionally challenging or sometimes, seemingly impossible.
  • What is the difference between ADHD Coaching and Therapy?
ADHD Coaching: Coaches work collaboratively with clients to identify and address challenges associated with ADHD, such as time management, organisation, and goal setting. The focus of ADHD coaching is on practical strategies, skill development, and creating systems to enhance daily functioning. Therapy: Therapy, on the other hand, is a broader term that encompasses various mental health approaches. In the context of ADHD, therapy may involve psychotherapy or counselling, and it is geared towards addressing the emotional and psychological aspects of ADHD. Therapists help individuals explore and understand the underlying issues that may be contributing to challenges associated with ADHD, such as emotional regulation, self-esteem, and interpersonal relationships. ADHD Coaching primarily focuses on practical strategies and skill development to improve specific areas of life affected by ADHD. Coaches may have backgrounds in coaching, education, or related fields, and they often specialise in ADHD coaching. Both ADHD coaching and therapy can be valuable resources as part of a multimodal treatment plan for ADHD, and the choice between the two often depends on personal preferences, goals, and the specific challenges a person is facing.
  • What is the role of your coach?
Your coach brings a specialty skill set in creating an environment where you should feel safe, respected, heard, and understood. The coach provides the essential nutrients, guidance, and care needed for the client's aspirations to blossom. Your coach can help you stay on course, or draw your attention to things they hear from you and ask questions like “Did you notice that?” and “Is that something you’d like to consider?” With an ADHD specific lens, your coach will encourage you to think about what you need to support your executive function difficulties, both in coaching sessions and life.
  • What is the role of the coachee/client?
Coaching is goal-directed, conversational partnership. Think of it like creating the most awesome garden of potential. The coach assists in cultivating a thriving environment, where your seeds of goals and dreams can germinate, grow, and ultimately flourish. You are the expert on yourself and your experience. You are responsible for setting your own goals, making your own decisions, and taking action in-between sessions to accomplish what you set for yourself.
  • Why work with an ADHD coach?
At BRNWLD, it’s our heartfelt commitment to work collaboratively with you, as we deeply empathise with you and your family's distinctive processing styles and individual needs. We firmly believe that by understanding these unique aspects, we can empower you to effectively advocate for yourselves in schools, workplaces, and relationships. Sometimes we are so focused on what we need to improve, that we forget to notice all the things we're naturally great at (and the things that people love about us!). We overlook our exceptional strengths because we tend to internalise the negative feedback loop which gets reinforced over time. ADHD coaching isn't about fixing something that's broken; it's about tapping into your unique strengths, navigating challenges, reframing unhelpful or limiting beliefs and unlocking potential. We’re your personalised brain tour guides, offering strategies tailored to your specific ADHD needs, whether it's boosting focus, managing time effectively, or creating a roadmap for success. We're here to provide support, understanding, and a sprinkle of motivation to make your ADHD journey not just manageable, but a path where you thrive. Together, we'll turn those quirks into strengths, helping you embrace and conquer the challenges that come your way.
